Ninja sa 2009 news

The Ninja SA group has grown over the first half of 2009. We have opened dojos in Edenvale, honeydew and Randpark Ridge in addition to the new dojos we have extended our program to two study groups one in Randfontein and the other in Bloemfontein. We have also had growth in Wales.

The Edenvale dojo started early this year and has shown that a dojo was needed in that area. The Edenvale dojo is run by a long time practitioner Sensei Sean Urquart, he has a vast knowledge within the art of Ninjitsu and is a very valuable asset to have on board.

Honeydew dojo has been opened by Sensei Daniel Alvares one of the co-founders of Ninja SA, he is also running a ninja kids program that help kids learn and study self defense routines to prepare them for any troubles on their path growing up. Daniel is a very versatile martial artists and trains in various arts; he also competes in various tournaments. He is the backbone of Ninja SA in South Africa, he makes sure all the things needed for all the schools are sorted out and everyone is happy.

The Randpark Ridge dojo is run by our most experienced Sensei, Nathan Lee, he boasts a 20 year plus training record and most of that is teaching. He is a precision martial artist and has one of the most interesting teaching styles in the group. He oversees the syllabus and makes sure there is a high standard of training throughout the group.

The study groups are new to Ninja SA; this idea came from people wanting to train but could not get to our schools. We developed a DVD distance learning program that has launched the first two levels of training to date. These DVD’s were snatched up by various people and the study groups were developed as a result.

These study groups are lead by experienced martial art practitioners in other arts, the one in Randfontein is an ex-student who moved too far to get to training and had to quit. He was the student responsible for inspiring the DVD’s, he could not make Dojo training any longer, but made a plan to visit us every Sunday and we filmed the whole syllabus for him to learn the art. Robain Polly has really shown dedication towards training and has an ever expanding knowledge on the subject of Ninjitsu.

The Bloemfontein study group is a really important group to Ninja SA as it is the first distance learning group that is fully trained via DVD and videos sent to the group leader. Bloemfontein Study Group started by Andre van Vuuren an ex-Karate instructor and member of the esteemed house of Imatsu. He was one of the very first to grab the DVD and the first to grade via DVD. His style is perfect and his personality is like that of the great martial artists. He is a dedicated practitioner and has helped streamline the study group process for distance learning.

With thanks to Randfontein and Bloemfontein we hope to develop the distance learning program to new heights as an ongoing process.

The UK dojos have been launched in South Wales as Sensei David moved over to the UK in early 2009.Ninja SA now belong to the IKASA, the International Korean All Styles Association. All instructors are CRB checked and hold five million pounds Liability insurance. There are two schools one in Llanharan and the other in Beddau. The interest in the UK is picking up and things are starting to happen. In addition to the full dojos, we have been introduced to the E3 program for schools; this is an extended government funded program for kids to take part in extra mural functions after school. We are calling it Ninja Self Defence and it too is doing very well. The classes run for two hours once a week at the Bryn Celynnog comprehensive school. We are hoping to extend this program to other schools in the area soon.

Meditation
This is a huge area of the martial arts, with so many experts and so many different ways of meditation in the arts, where does one start? The first and most important thing to remember is every instructor will show you their methods of meditation; the thing to remember, it’s what worked for them. There are standard methods that each martial art teach, which has passed down over the years from teacher to student that give you a good guide to work from but always look into yourself for more. This article I will talk a little about the first form of meditation that we show or teach within Ninja SA.

As you progress through the system you will be taught a wealth of martial technique and you will practice them till perfect. To guide you along this path we use a form of meditation. This form can be done anytime of the day or night. To enhance ones mental attribute and develop a more natural feel to the art, you learn the skill of visualization in application to Ninjitsu. To do this you need to clear your mind of thought, concentrate on your breathing. Breathe through your nose, slowly and in a relaxed manner, filling your lower abdomen first then your lungs, on the exhale, lungs first then lower abdomen. You can be standing, seated or lying down. You will find that your mind wonders a bit after a few breaths, focus on the most recent training. Visualize yourself in the class again, feel and see yourself going through the motions of the techniques you performed. Feel everything as if you were actually at training. This form of meditation can be done any time, you can find five minutes for yourself. The best time though, is as you go to bed and are trying to fall asleep, it is believed that the training then goes to the sub-conscious. This puts your martial arts into a different category, making the physical automated response to external stimulus a martial one.

Once you get into a habit using this form of meditation you will find that you no longer have to think about what technique are needed to which attack, it is automated. You will also see a huge increase in reaction time in your body. This technique can also be applied to anything in your life that you are learning.

The Modern Ninja
When we think of ninjas, we think of a dark character in a mask and all sorts of weaponry hidden beneath a black suit, possibly running along a roof with sword drawn and invading a samurai compound. Ninjas were the assassins of the day they were skilled in their specialty family fighting style and made the effort to follow a strict code of conduct. They were the elite of the elite and their mystic myths are still strong to this day.

A lot has changed from when they were paid bodyguards or assassins for hire; today we train for our own individual needs and requirements, either for personal growth or to gain the ability to defend one’s self and family from a violent attack. There are many reasons for you to want to learn Ninjitsu, a modern ninja also learns the art of healing, not only do ninja have the skill to cause pain but we can also ease pain.

The training gives you control over your emotions, deeper understanding of yourself and those around you. It transforms you by giving you the confidence and added abilities that enhance your life for the better. There is no funny magic other than the magic of growth and development of self.

The modern ninja is not only a formidable fighter but a highly skilled and balanced martial artist.

Student Testimonials
Bloemfontien Study Group - Lamour Koen
Before I joined the Ninjitsu SA study group in Bloemfontein , I was part of a Karate Club where I was a 4th Kyu Karateka. The atmosphere sometimes felt like a military camp. My first thoughts was that Ninjitsu is going to be pretty much similar , but oh boy I was wrong. I found a style that is actually fun to learn and at the same time , affective in the modern world. It doesn’t matter how tired I am after a hard day at work , it’s the great vibe in our study group that encourages me to go to class and enjoying every minute of it! I couldn’t think of anyone better than Sensei Andre’ to teach us. I would describe Sensei Andre’ as dedicated ,patient, a good teacher and to top it all , he has a great sense of humor.

Learning the ways of the Ninja

Bloemfontien Study Group - Francois Botha
I have been doing karate for about eight years. I have seen many martial art styles, but ninjitsu intrigued me the most. I expected rigid military-like training that gradually builds up your fighting moves. What I got was a fun and loose way of training that conditions my body and is fun to do. The syllabus is set out to my liking, handling one concept at a time, and in a logical order. I am excited to learn the weapons in the syllabus that is something completely new to me. It is more comfortable than most other martial arts, in the way you keep your posture comfortably without using unnecessary energy in unnecessary movements. Using nature elements in martial arts is a new concept to me, one that makes complete sense and is logically and effectively used in fighting. Andre van Vuuren has many years of martial arts experience, and is continuing to share his experience with us. He is dedicated and devotes a lot of time, money and sweat to teach us ninjitsu. I enjoy training under him.

Bloemfontien Study Group - Janes Oosthuizen
I would like to thank Sensei Andre for the experience of the past few weeks. This is the first time I am doing a sport of this nature and although some would see it as a painful and "hard" sport. Sensei Andre has indeed made it to be a fun experience. Although it’s tough and hard work, I can already see improvement. I really look forward to every Wednesday and Monday, as I enjoy the martial art and also enjoy the Study Group and the people within the Group. I would love to see more Ninjitsu activity in Bloemfontein.. Thank you once again Sensei!! Os
