Ninja sa October 2009 news
Hi Guys
Just a quick Introduction. My name is Carel AKA "Ox"/ "Ox Man" Whichever you prefer. I'll admit, I've been lacking on my part for the last two months, I'm going to be helping Sensei David out with the newsletter. So if anyone wants us to put any information, or wants to request anything in paticular then please send an email to ninja@ninja.co.za or ninja@ninja.co.uk, and we'll see what we can do about your request.
Just a quick re-cap. last month (September) we had grading which went Very well. I'm still waiting to hear from the other dojo's about how it went on their side. I train at the Randpark Ridge dojo with Sensei Nathan, Garth, and Brian. For the last grading, Sensei Daniel Alvares, and his guys from the Honeydew Dojo joined us, so we had a fantastic and energetic grading, we also met some new faces. I'm sure there's some of the newer guys that can't wait to get up to the higher levels after attending this grading and seeing some those mind boggeling moves. "I'm one of them." We saw some Awesome Takedowns, Knife work, and Gun work. Chris really impressed the guys with his Ninja Keyring techniques as he motioned closer to his Black Belt.
Sensei David has done some more Awesome work on the Ninja SA website. He's added a FORUM, where you guys can start posting questions and share ideas. It's really great. If anyone has any queries or they are battling with anything then you can simply type out your query and we can all start helping one another out... YAY!!! This comes in great Handy when you start climbing the ladders, and especially just before grading when you start getting confused between different moves. I know a classic one that always gets asked is the difference between a Back-Leg and Front-Leg Drop. Come on guys, go have a look, check out the Ninja Blog and start increasing your Martial Arts Skills by getting into contact with other guys that enjoy doing your style. Check it out... http://ninja.co.za/NinjaBlog
Another addition to the vast growing material of Ninja SA. Sensei David has setup a Ninja SA group on Facebook. Next time you're browsing facebook, please go check it out and add yourself. We Love making new friends and getting to know one another better. Share ideas, share experiences, Become part of the Ninja SA Family.
Sensei David was in South Africa to get married. Just a quickl congratulations to him and his new Wife :-) He also travelled to Bloemfontein to visit Sensei Andre and the guys in the Study group there. It turned out to be a great success. We're glad that these study groups are progressing well and starting to show some Great Potential.
Well with the December Grading coming up in only 7 weeks time, We surely hope you've all been practicing and starting to get skilled up. Just a few tips: Remember to show a little aggression when you do your atemi strikes, don't lean over your opponents body when you do a take-down, and also don't drop your hands when you kick. We cannot Stress the Importance of this enough!
Women in Ninja SA. Guys just a quick note on training with Ladies in your Dojo. Please don't be afraid to train with a lady at any time. They are also there to learn and expect to be treated as equalls. It can sometimes be very demeaning to a lady if you don't want to train with her because you're affraid that you will hurt her. Please treat the ladies in the dojo with as much respect aS You would like to be treated. Just a note to the Ladies... If a guy in the dojo isn't aggressive enough with you, then show a lot more aggression to them to show them that they mustn't be afraid to treat you like an equal. We want to make sure that everyone at Ninja SA receives the same quality of training.
Website updates
Ninja SA have re-vamped the web site, it has a new look and loads more
content...
A brand new forum for discussions and reference to the Ninja syllabus, sign up and gain the extra knowledge. There are all sorts of topics and tips for you to read through, we will be posting full techniques in picture and video format for the registered users. We have added some fun games and some of the games help with certain fighting concepts that relate to the real world. Find out more online!

Eating Right
It has come to our attention that some of the students are battling to get through the warm-up sessions, and sometimes feel dizzy. This then in turn leaves you sitting out on the side watching the other guys for a few minutes, which I'm sure mustn't feel very nice.
The most common reason as to why this happens is because you have low blood sugar. It is important to eat right the days that you train and to keep your blood sugar balanced. Majority of the time these students have eaten very little during the day. This is very bad for muscle recovery and from an energy point of view. To prevent this from happening have some additional fruit on the days that you train, and also try to have a something small to eat about 2 hours before you train. This should help your energy levels a lot.
Once you get into a habit of eating a healthier and at the right times then you will see that you will feel more energized and have a lot more power in the dojo.

Weapon of the Month
Tanto – Dagger
This weapon is carried by men and women of samurai birth, concealed in the waist band with a slight curved blade and a wavy tempered edge
This is also a favorite tool amongst the Japanese mafia – the Jakuza, used for cutting off the little finger in order to save honor on a disgraced mission.
Sensei Says
TDM – Timing, Distance & Mobility
What differentiates a great Martial Artist from a Good One?
Attitude – Listen and learn
Skill - Apply what you are taught
Enjoyment - You must want to train and learn
Knowledge - Study your techniques and perfect them
Balance - Without it, you have nothing
These are important attributes to have, to become a great Martial Artist
Above this I have one major attribute, that I teach in all my classes - TDM
What is it, let’s break it down and use an attacker trying to knife you, using a straight thrust attack.
Timing
If you do not react on time, you will not survive the encounter ,whether it is a skilled fighter or a street mugger, when he attacks, you need to judge his speed and skill, if you move too soon you could move past your attacker forcing you to change your tactics, too late and your attacker can change theirs.
Your timing needs to be perfect, to block the attack and disarm the attacker.
Distance
Judge the distance, you need this to not only correctly block an attack but to deliver an Atemi strike to area’s that will both disarm your attacker and cause pain to help you overcome the attack.
Mobility
You need to be light on your feet, enabling you to move fluidly, move on the balls of your feet, this will enable you to move soft but strike hard
If you have practiced these three fundamentals, you will find all your other techniques fall into place easily.

Student Testimonials
RandPark Ridge Dojo - Mohammed Pochee
"I think Ninja SA Is wicked it did actually its like here at work the guys use to bully me even though it was just playing I use to take it now they get some pain compliance. + my confidence has changed some what a lot I’m not shy to speak my mind some times a bit to much. What I’m looking forward to is the sparing and I had an idea like every other odd weak end if we could arrange a ninja hide and seek type thing never really taught it true yet"
Thanks Zu

Randpark Ridge - Nishkar Govender
"Ninjutsu, is fun yet practical. Not only is it physically challenging, but when you engage one on one with different training partners you realise that the techniques learnt may be of use someday"

Bloemfontien Study Group - Janes Oosthuizen
"I would like to thank Sensei Andre for the experience of the past few weeks.
This is the first time I am doing a sport of this nature and although some would see it as a painful and "hard" sport.
Sensei Andre has indeed made it to be a fun experience.
Although it’s tough and hard work, I can already see improvement.
I really look forward to every Wednesday and Monday, as I enjoy the martial art and also enjoy the Study Group and the people within the Group.
I would love to see more Ninjitsu activity in Bloemfontein..
Thank you once again Sensei!!"
